One Direction

Ok, so I'm a massive One Direction fan, a Directioner. I know all their songs and a lot of facts. I've decide to do an article on them. For those of you who don't know, One Direction is a British boyband. The members are: Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Mallik. They are amazing and really talanted. Here are a few facts about them: Liam is afraid of spoons. Louis really likes carrots. Harry once had a whole conversation with a cat when he was drunk. Niall is afraid of pigeons. Zayn thinks they are paid in chocolate-covered peanuts. Harry has 4 nipples. Louis had a pet plastic pigeon called Kevin. He lost it during travel ;) Liam has one kidney. Louis and Zayn escaped a hotel in Australia. Liam's favourite song is Moments. The band's favourite song is Up All Night. Harry showers twice a day. Louis' favourite animal is the monkey. Niall is claustrophobic.

Hey waz up readers! Sorry we haven't been posting recently, but right now our admins are doing are annual exams and haven't had much time or inspiration to write. We are also currently down to one writer, so ideas are a bit harder to come up with. But don't worry! Exams finish Monday (chemistry) and by Tuesday we'll be blogging like crazy again :)
I don't know about you, but exams tire me out. By the end of them, my brain feels like a prune, shrivelled up and tiny. Which is why I embrace and welcome the summer holidays. They are a time to relax and just stop working for a few months. Here are some songs which will definitely bring you into the summer mood;

tutti frutti summer love - Gunther

Air-planes- B.o.B ft. Haley Williams

Endless Summer- Cascada

Summer's not hot- Selena Gomez

Owl City- Saltwater room

(this isn't exactly summery but I love it)
Owl City - Fireflies

Ahhhh. Those songs got me nice and relaxed, (the AC helps with that too).

That reminds me! Do you live in a country where you get extreme heatwaves really often in Summer? Well I do. In fact, we're going through one right now. Here are some tips to keep cool in Summer;

  • First of all, drink water. Lots and lots of water. It keeps you hydrated, not to mention, it helps your complexion and helps you kidneys work better.
  • Second, when you're at home, turn on the AC or a fan. If using an AC, keep it on until the room cools and then switch it off.
  • Eat and drink cold things like cold water (or any other drink) and ice-cream, and avoid baking. I don't know if this is obvious or not, but don't go drinking something like soup or hot chocolate or tea (especially during the afternoon). If you do, blame yourself for the heat.
  • Wear light clothes in light colours. Believe it or not, the colour of the garment has an effect on the heat trapped. Avoid wearing black during the day.
  • Take multiple, cold showers (this also helps your perspiration ;D)
  • Stay in the shade.
  • Ok, I don't want to sound like your mother, but she's right, If you're going out between 11a.m and 4p.m, wear sunblock (especially if you're fair, you have no idea how painful the consequences are).
  • This leads me to: avoid going out at all during 11 and 4 if it is possible.
The Sun is good in ways, it provides the right conditions for living things on Earth. It gives plants the use of photosynthesis. It sheds light on our planet. It gives us heat. It also provides us with vitamin D. But the sun is also very bad. Too much UV ray intake can cause skin cancers and diseases, many like being 'tan' and to a certain point, that's not such a bad thing. But not everyone should take the same amount of sunlight. People who's skin responds well to melanin (the pigment that makes our skin darker because of the sun) can afford to stay a while out in the sun without too much damage, but people who aren't as lucky, as in people who are fair, please, do NOT stay in the sun too long. I cannot stress that enough. I speak from experience that a lot of sun is very harmful to your skin. I once stayed in the sun for four hours without sunblock and the skin on my leg became dehydrated. Badly. You can ask admin gulie98 and she can vouch for it. I looked terrible, not to mention the rest of my body got sunburnt. Sometimes, I can't even walk because of sunburns. Trust me when I say that too much sun isn't good for you. You must wear protection.

On a less serious note, summer is a time to hang out with friends, go to the beach and have some fun (remembering all the points listed above). Laugh, pull pranks, eat an ice-cream and enjoy it while it lasts!

Feel free to comment below about what you think of summer and the protection against the sun. If you have some advice of your own, or if you want to share your experiences with the sun, send it to us in the comments or at this email: indigoandart@gmail.com

A Day in the life of a Domestic Pet

Hi guys! I wrote this during my English exam this morning. I went a bit out of point so I had to write another one to give in. I prefer this one though. I hope you like it :D

A Day in the Life of a Domestic Pet.

          Hi. I'm Julian. I am a domestic cat. My life isn't too full of surprises, which is exactly why I like it. I run into no danger, I'm not threatened by stray dogs. I am quite lazy, but I don't find myself fat. A lot of people call me ugly and chubby (I don't get it!). Humph. The nerve!
          Even though I am lazy, I like to do many things. I like to scratch the curtains, to be cradled in my owner's arms and, more importantly, to bathe and bask in the Sun's welcoming rays. I'm afraid I can't run around like I used to. Age has gotten the better of me, but don't let that fool you, you should see how quick I am when my owner's brother cooks fish!
          My owner is a five-year-old boy named Andrea. He has a big brown afro. He's very loving and he appreciates my company. He realizes the honour of being in my presence. On his birthday, we went to a Japanese restaurant, were I ate the most delicious food! Did I mention that I hate cat food? Well, I do. It's tasteless and it's smelly.
         I seem strange to many people. Not many like me as I tend to scratch their eyes out. But there's a good reason why. Back in my youth, when I was still a kitten, I was abandoned, along with my best friend, Lila. We grew up together, we fended for ourselves and we laughed and played to out hearts' content. But, one day whilst playing in the nearby field, she was captured by a human. The memory of her haunts me. This is why I'm so aggressive around strangers.  Andrea keeps taking me out, hoping I make friends. But he doesn't understand, perhaps because all he hears is 'miao'. Him and his brother, Mick, are the only ones safe from my lethal claws.
         I'm so glad Mick found me. I will never forget he kindness he showed to a homeless, lonely cat. He took me in and from then onwards, I always have a full belly, a warm bed to sleep in and a roof over my head. "Ah, yes, Andrea continue scratching my ear!". Life is good when you're you're a domestic cat.

                                                                                                                                -CC

Local Bands - Winter Moods

Ok, so us here in malta, we aren't very known around the world. So I've decided to dedicate this post (and more to come) on local bands, singers, etc...

Winter Moods

Winter Moods was formed in mid-eighties. Two young musicians, including bassist Joseph Rizzo were in a band in search for a vocalist. They took on a friend still in his teens, Ivan Grech. They preferred music over everything else in life. They met frequently in a garage in Senglea on cold grey days to put together their own original songs. Thus the mood, thus the name of the band – Winter Moods.
The early years were all about playing in front of a crowd. The local music scene was ripe with activity. Bands came and went, some making more noise than others. Only one band stood the test of time, evolving and adapting itself to the changes in the music scene.
Etienne Robinich joined on keyboards. During the nineties the emergence of new radio stations put an emphasis on airplay. Winter Moods released their first single ‘Sarah’, which was an instant hit with listeners. This song remains one of the band’s most popular tracks to this day. ‘Sarah’ was included in the band’s first CD album released in 1996. Self-titled Winter Moods, the album was reminiscent of the members’ original influences.

Guitarist Melvin Caruana was the last member to join the band in 1997. Shortly after, in 2000, the band went on to launch their next CD album, ‘Morning Ale’ which produced hit songs ‘Jamaica’, ‘Ride’ and ‘Everyday Song’ – awarded the best song of all time.
Winter Moods’ third CD album, ‘Butterfly House’ was released in April 2003. It featured the top hit ‘Come To You’, and following on its predecessor’s success, this album reached the top of the local charts within days of its release. Winter Moods’ fourth album ‘Ordinary Men’ combines the band’s musical expertise with new styles. ‘Ordinary Men’ became the band’s best selling album to date, and includes the band’s most famous song ‘Marigold’.
The band’s youngest member, Karl Fenech joined in 2009 to play on drums.
Winter Moods celebrated their silver anniversary in 2010 with the launch of a new album , ‘Argento’.
Winter Moods etched their name in Maltese music history by performing in front of 10,000 people at The Granaries (Il-Fossos) , Floriana in July 2010. It was the largest ever Maltese crowd to attend a paying concert by a Maltese artist. Winter Moods only superseded their own 2008 record when over 7500 people had turned up for their concert at the Valletta Waterfront.
Through their career, Winter Moods had to opportunity to meet and perform with some of their idols, namely Bryan Adams, Elton John, Roger Hodgson (ex-Supertramp), Bob Geldof, Fish (ex-Marillion), Antonello Venditti, Deep Purple and the SAS Band. The SAS Band was made up of Spike Edney (ex-Queen keyboardist), Paul Young, Fish and Chris Thompson, with whom Ivan also sang ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.
Winter Moods also performed alongside Maroon 5, Enrique Iglesias and Akon in the Isle of MTV Malta Special. In 2007 the band supported the CiaO’Scia concert held in Malta featuring Claudio Baglioni, Gianni Morandi and Riccardo Cocciante. Baglioni sang Winter Moods’ ‘Marigold’ together with the band.
Winter Moods performed at number of music festivals in Europe. In June 2000, the band performed at the Belfort Rock Festival in France, in September 2002 Winter Moods participated at the National Youth Rock Festival in Cyprus. In July 2003 Winter Moods were invited to perform at the Hard Rock Café in Rome. In 2004, following the success in German radio WDR2′s competition – Europa XXL, where Winter Moods placed first amongst 10 bands from Europe, and was invited to perform at the Ring Fest held in Cologne, Germany.
Over the years Winter Moods garnered several awards. The band was voted as the Best Band at six editions of the Malta Music Awards (1997, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010). Winter Moods also received the Best Song award for their timeless hit ‘Marigold’ (2007) and ‘My Neverland’ (2010), and the Best Song Writer award for Ivan Grech in 2007 and 2010. In 2008 the band was awarded the Legends Award – the first time such an award was handed out.
During the Bay Music Awards 2004 Winter Moods were awarded the Icon Award for their on going contribution to the Maltese music scene and for the success their countless singles have had on 89.7 Bay. During the Bay Music Awards 2005 the band won best single of the year award for ‘Closer’ and the best single of all time award for ‘Everyday Song’. In 2007 the band garnered a further three BMAs this time for Best Band, Best Song (Marigold) and the Viewers’ Choice.

Now, (Maltese) international tenor and worldwide sensation, Joseph Calleja, has joined forces with Winter Moods in a collaboration on the band’s latest hit ballad, Miss You. The song recently topped Maltese charts for five weeks and has already become a favourite with many. The special version with Joseph Calleja be heard here and on Maltese radio stations from Monday.

"We are delighted and honoured to collaborate with Joseph on a song, especially on a ballad like Miss You,” said Ivan Grech, Winter Moods’ frontman. “Joseph’s unique voice takes the song to a whole new level, and we are certain that our followers, who have already fallen in love with Miss You, will also appreciate this new version."

Re:brain teasers

For us here in Malta, Summer vacation is merely 12 days away. Exams started on the 6th of June. My brain already feels like mush. In a way, I can't wait for Summer to come! No more homework and no more studying! But, from another aspect, school ending is a horrible thing. I mean, think about it, without school, you don't see your friends,. and, frankly after 3 months of doing nothing, you get really bored. At least that's my opinion. What do you think about school and summer? Are you happy with the amount of holidays you get? If you could change one thing from your school, what would it be?

On a totally unrelated subject, I'm going to add something to my dear friend's and fellow admin's brain teaser post. Here are a few riddles you might enjoy:

The hands
I have hands that wave at you, though I never say goodbye. What am I?

An electric fan.

The Light Elephant;
I'm larger than an elephant but lighter than air. what am I?

The wind

I run too fast;
For some I go fast, for others I'm slow. To most people I'm an obsession, relying on me is a well practiced lesson. What am I?

Time

Foundations of building
A blue house is made of blue bricks,. A yellow house is made of yellow bricks. A red house is made of red bricks. An orange house is made of orange bricks. What would a greenhouse be made of?

Glass!

The free car;
A man was going to buy a car for $5000, but he didn't pay a penny for the car. How is this possible?

He didn't pay a penny! He payed $5000 for the car!

Roots;
What has roots that nobody sees. Is taller than trees. Up, up it grows and yet it never grows?

A mountain.

Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet are found dead on the floor in a bedroom. When they were discovered, there were pieces of glass and some water on the floor. The only furniture in the room is a shelf and a bed. The house is in a remote location, away from everything except for the nearby railway track. What caused the death of Romeo and Juliet?

Romeo and Juliet are fish. The rumble of the train knocked the bowl off the shelf.

The invisible apple;
There are 20 people in an empty square room. Each person has full sight of the entire room and everyone in it. If you are not allowed to move in any way (except your eyes), where can you place an apple so that all but one person can see it?

On one person's head.

Carnival trick;

A boy was at a carnival and went to a booth where a man said to the boy, "If I write your exact weight on this piece of paper then you have to give me $50, but if I cannot, I will pay you $50." The boy looked around and saw no scale so he agrees, thinking no matter what the carny writes he'll just say he weighs more or less. In the end the boy ended up paying the man $50. How did the man win the bet?
The man did exactly as he said he would and wrote 'your exact weight' on the paper.
In the whole
What is it that when you take away the whole, you still have some left over?
Wholesome
The days of the week.

Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday?
yesterday, today and tomorrow!

What God never sees;

Read my riddle, I pray. What God never sees, what the king seldom sees, and what we see every day. What is it?

An equal.

Fill me up;

Many things can create one, it can be of any shape or size, it is created for various reasons, and it can shrink or grow with time.

What is it?

A hole.
Almost Alive

They have not flesh, nor feathers, nor scales, nor bone. Yet they have fingers and thumbs of their own. What are they?
Gloves.
Hard to carry

This is as light as a feather but nobody can hold it for long, what is it?
Your breath.

                                                                                                                                               -CC

Brain teasers

It's fun to solve brain teasers. I've heard your brain is like a muscle, so i f you exercise it (by teasing it) you'll have a fit brain. Even if that's not true, I still like to solve them. If you know some good brain teasers, please leave them in a comment.

Eurovision 2012

"*Ahem* Ladies and genlemen, let the Eurovision 2012, begin!" That is how Eurovision 2012 presenters, Eldar, Leyla and Nargiz, kicked off this year's Eurovision song contest. Those of you who don't live in Europe might not know what this contest is. Well, as the name suggests, the Eurovision song contest is  indeed a song contest where European countries send one band/singer/whatever to perform 1 song. Then, these songs undergo a semi-final in which 10 songs are chosen, which then, in turn, go through the final, where the winning song is chosen. This year, the Eurovision was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, as they one last year's edition with the song Running Scared sung by Ell and Nicki. http://youtu.be/vvZlEAP5Z28

This year, the Eurovision was won by Sweden, with the song Euphoria sung by Loreen. http://youtu.be/4nJcmLMb5to

Now, to be honest, I am very proud of my country's performance this year, and making it to the final is a great achievement in itself. This year, us here in Malta chose the song This Is The Night sung by Kurt Calleja  http://youtu.be/ZHog5Vg53t8to to represent us in the Eurovision, and we came in 21st in the final.

Re: Studying: Advice

Hey CC, you were getting a bit out of the point about that constantly reading thing... but I have to agree, reading a lot helps A LOT in your written language (I should know, cause like CC here, I'm always in some great book). But you need to practise reading aloud too (you were sounding like our maltese teacher at that point *Hi Mr. Borg!*)... it really is good advice. If it helps, hold your breath for a few seconds and calm yourself down, that's what I did today before my Italian oral exam. Practice speaking clearly. Speak how you would want any other person you are listening to to speak. Calmly, confidently, fluently.

I have my own tips now. These really have to do with those kinda subjects where you have to study theory like Biology, the written Art exam and in some cases, Physics. MAKE YOUR OWN NOTES. Nothing too formal needed, a few sheets of paper a pen and highlighters (optional for those who like colourful notes, like yours truly). Simply jot down the important stuff in a format you relate to. For example, I sometimes do mine in bullet form, other times, I have arrows joining one phrase to the next. Another tip is music. I love music, it is my way of life, my means of expressing myself. Those who know me are very aware of it. When I study, I listen to music from my headphones. I don't play it too loud. Then, during the exam, I play that song in my head, and whatever I studied while lstening to that song comes to mind.

That's all I really have to say.... so.... caw! (caw- maltese for bye, pronounced like the italian word: ciao)

P.S.: You might be wondering why were suddenly posting about studying, well, we are undergoing the final exams at school and that's almost the most prominent thing at the moment.... Come on CC, only a couple of weeks of exams left, then it's Summer!

Studying: Advice

I got some advice about studying. For those of you who take Italian, English or really any other language, here's what I do to make studying easier. The best way to study a language is to listen to it. Those who have Italian and have channels in Italian, make it  point to watch at least an hour a day. You'll be surprised the difference it makes. Trust me, at the age of six/seven-ish, I already understood Italian (and no, I don't live in Italy). I understood it because back then, we didn't get English TV, it was all in Italian so eventually my mind got used to the language. It only made sense to further my studies by taking it at school. This tip helps in any language.
To listen to the language helps you understand, but it doesn't teach you how to spell. To do this, you must read. Now don't groan. reading is an incredible thing, it's a whole new world of adventure, it's fun, you just have to find the right book. Back to the point, if you read, then words, phrases, tenses- everything, will practically come into your mind. Tests, homework and exams will become so much easier. So much so that I barely study for my English exam, this is because I always have my nose stuck in a book! Now I'm not saying exaggerate, there's no need to overdo-it, hey if you like reading than go ahead and read all day, but if you don't like it so much, then read at least an hour a day. The difference it makes is great, it help your reading skills, writing and spelling skills and your conjugation abilities.
Now that you know the tricks, you have to remember your orals. It's useless if you can read and write but can't speak. I would know, I'm constantly reading but this doesn't help me vocally. When I have to read out loud I freeze, I start rambling and tripping on words, luckily I know a trick for this too. First of all, if you're going to speak in front of people, and especially if you have stage-fright like me, you have to pretend you're alone. Pretend that there's no one there. And realize this; there's no need to rush your words. Speak loudly enough so the teacher/ audience will hear, speak clearly and remember to enunciate your words. If it's a language with a lot of accents like French, remember to pronounce them well. Speaking your passage in front of a mirror also helps with vocal aid. I don't know why but it does.
These are the main tips I can think of. In short, Listen. Read. Enunciate- Speak. I hope this helped you in some way or other, comment below with your thoughts, we're always happy to receive your feedback. You can also comment about what you wish our next post to be about, we'll post it as soon as we possibly can.
